Palo Alto, Santa Clara County
Palo Alto means tall tree in Spanish, and the tree is real: a coast redwood more than a thousand years old still stands beside San Francisquito Creek. Leland and Jane Stanford founded their university on the adjoining farm in 1885 in memory of their only son, and it opened in 1891. The town was laid out soon after to serve the campus.
